Entertainment giant Walt Disney Co. is expanding into mobile. Looking to capitalize on the app boom, Disney has acquired application developer Tapulous. Since its inception in 2008, Tapulous applications have been downloaded over 35,000,000 times. If Disney wishes to break into the mobile gaming market, this certainly seems a viable way of doing so. Well known for their popular iPhone and iPad gaming applications, Tapulous is one of the best in the business. An estimated one-third of all iPhone users have downloaded the company's music games, which feature hundreds of songs from artists including Justin Bieber and Lady Gaga.

Gaining Traction


Mobile marketing is making waves in Pittsburgh. Larger companies such as Dick's Sporting Goods and Giant Eagle are utilizing mobile platforms to reach out and connect with their customers. But it's not just the big corporations in Pittsburgh that have caught on to the growing trend. Victoria Dilliott, owner of local coffee shop Affogato in Bellevue, promotes her business through FourSquare in addition to social media initiatives. She offers first-time mayors an Affogato travel mug for $5, instead of the usual $12. FourSquare is a sort of location-based program that cell phone users can use to let friends know where they are or to comment on a particular place.

"Text For Your Next", SMS Fights Breast Cancer

Sharsheret, a nonprofit organization, is dedicated to the ongoing fight against breast cancer. Sharsheret has teamed up with Ping Mobile to help them develop their campaign. “With “Text For Your Next,” Sharsheret is reaching out to women where they are – on their cell phones – to remind them to schedule their annual mammograms and screenings,” said Elana Silber, director of operations at Sharsheret, Teaneck, NJ. “The goal is that with this simple text we are promoting breast health and breast cancer awareness and ultimately we will save lives." The campaign, which is directed at younger Jewish women who are at risk to develop cancer early on, comes at a time when more and more young women are juggling exceedingly busy lives. Between family, social lives and hectic work schedules, it is apparent why something like a doctors visit may fall by the wayside.
